in Wantage

A developing cycle route designed to connect the Kingsgrove residential area with Wantage town centre, this initiative makes getting into town by bike straightforward and practical.

2.1 km 8 min easy

It's a newer project, but one that reflects the growing appetite for accessible cycling infrastructure in the area.

Wantage itself is a lively market town with considerable history. The central market square features a prominent statue of King Alfred the Great, who was born here in the 9th century, and the town retains much of its historic character. You'll find independent shops throughout the centre, local cafes for refreshments, and a weekly market that brings the town to life. Once the route is fully established, cycling in will feel like a natural way to arrive and explore.

Beyond the town, Wantage works well as a base for exploring the wider landscape. You're close to the rolling chalk hills of the North Wessex Downs and within reach of the ancient Ridgeway path. The surrounding area is dotted with quiet lanes and bridleways that reward cycling exploration. Nearby towns worth visiting include Grove, Faringdon, and Lambourn, each offering their own character and connectivity. While the main Cotswolds area sits a little further away, this part of Oxfordshire has its own distinct appeal for anyone interested in cycling through open countryside and market town exploration.
