A former Wesleyan Chapel on Wantage's Market Place has been given new life as a community arts venue run by local volunteers.
Rather than operating like a standard cinema or theatre, Makespace responds directly to what people in town actually want to experience, so you might find anything from mainstream films and independent cinema to live comedy, music performances, theatre, or talks and lectures on the programme.
What makes it different is that it functions as a genuine cultural hub rather than just a place to sit and watch. The venue runs workshops and community activities throughout the year, giving you a real sense of how locals spend their time and what they care about culturally. The chapel building itself is worth noticing too, with its original character thoughtfully preserved through the conversion.
The programming feels genuinely considered rather than formulaic, which is refreshing if you're looking beyond the typical visitor attractions. You get a real flavour of the town's character by spending time here.
Wantage itself rewards exploration as a proper market town with independent shops and cafes scattered throughout the centre. It's well-positioned if you're travelling between Abingdon and Faringdon or spending time in this part of Oxfordshire more broadly. Makespace is the kind of stop that shows you how a place actually lives and works, rather than how it presents itself to tourists.
