Just outside Down Ampney in the southern Cotswolds sits a working vineyard that's become something of a local success story since opening in 2010.
Run as a family business, Poulton Hill has built a solid reputation for quality English wines over the years. You can walk among the vines themselves—varieties like Seyval Blanc and Pinot Noir grow here—which gives you a genuine sense of how viticulture operates in this region.
The vineyard offers guided tours that take you through the entire winemaking process, from the vines through to bottling, followed by tastings of their white, rosé, red, and sparkling wines. It's an excellent way to understand what makes English wine distinctive. The cellar door is open for direct bottle purchases, and the whole place has a refreshingly relaxed atmosphere—perfect for an unhurried afternoon or when you want something different from exploring the area's historic villages. Being close to Cirencester and the market town of Fairford, it fits naturally into a broader day out in the region.
