Perched near the top of the Cotswolds, this market town blends serious historical roots with a real sense of life and activity.

Talbot Court, GL54 1BQ

Stow-on-the-Wold grew wealthy on the wool trade, and you can read that history in the unusually spacious market square, which once teemed with thousands of sheep during the great annual fairs.

It's a genuinely enjoyable place to spend time exploring at whatever pace suits you. The quieter streets running off the square are worth your attention—they're lined with independent shops, art galleries, and welcoming cafes where you're likely to stumble on something interesting, sample some local fare, or simply sit and take in the surroundings. St. Edward's Church deserves a visit, particularly the north door framed by ancient yew trees, which really does give you a tangible connection to how long this town has been here.

If you stay in the town centre, everything is on your doorstep and easily walkable. That said, you're also well positioned to explore further. Moreton-in-Marsh, with its railway station, is just a short drive away, and other appealing villages like Bourton-on-the-Water and Broadway are equally accessible. It's an excellent base if you want a proper town experience without sacrificing easy access to countryside walks and the broader region.
