The cathedral is genuinely impressive, with centuries of history running through it, and the docks have been carefully restored into a pleasant spot with cafes and attractions scattered around. The city centre has plenty of other shops to look around too, so you could easily spend a few hours wandering. It's also a convenient base for getting around the wider region. Cheltenham is within easy reach for a day trip if you want to see a larger spa town, and Stroud is nearby as well if you're interested in the creative side of the Cotswolds, with its independent shops and galleries. From Gloucester, you're well-positioned to head into the heart of the Cotswolds without needing to travel too far.
