This is a working market town on the River Cherwell in north Oxfordshire, serving as the commercial heart for surrounding rural areas across Oxfordshire, Warwickshire, and Northamptonshire.
Rather than feeling like a tourist destination, Banbury functions as a proper town where locals go about their daily lives, which actually makes it more interesting to visit if you want to see how the Cotswolds really operates.
The town has been famous since medieval times for Banbury cakes—those spiced pastries you can still buy from local bakers today, and hunting down an authentic one is definitely worth doing. The town centre has genuine independent shops, a working Saturday market, and a solid selection of restaurants and cafes. If you fancy a walk, the riverside paths along the Cherwell offer pleasant routes without needing to venture far.
There's genuine industrial heritage here too. The Jacobs Douwe Egberts coffee factory gives you a real sense of how manufacturing became central to the modern town. There's also the curious connection to that old nursery rhyme about a lady on a white horse, which adds a layer of intrigue when you're exploring the high street.
Because Banbury isn't as heavily visited as some other Cotswolds spots, you get to experience authentic town life rather than a staged version of it. It makes an excellent base for exploring the wider region, with good transport connections and plenty of accommodation available. The riverside setting and market town character give it quite a different character from the more celebrated attractions elsewhere in the area.
