Heading into this part of the Oxfordshire Cotswolds, you'll find a village that really revolves around its magnificent fortified manor house.
It's a pleasant place to spend a few hours exploring, especially if you're interested in history and impressive architecture.
The undoubted centrepiece here is Broughton Castle, a medieval moated manor house that has been home to the Fiennes family, Barons Saye and Sele, for generations. It’s remarkable how well-preserved it is, evolving from its 14th-century origins into a more comfortable family residence in the 16th century, yet retaining its defensive character. History enthusiasts will know it played a significant role during the English Civil War, being a hub for Parliamentarian planning under Lord Saye and Sele. When it's open, you can wander through the historic rooms and enjoy the beautiful grounds and gardens. Right next to the castle, you'll find St Mary's Church, which shares centuries of history with the estate.
Beyond the castle gates, take a stroll through the village itself, admiring the traditional stone cottages that give the area its character. It’s a quiet spot for a wander. For wider amenities or train connections, the market town of Banbury is a short drive away. You’re also conveniently close to other villages like North Newington, Bloxham, and Wroxton, making it easy to link up with further explorations.
