A 14th-century fortified manor house that's been home to the Fiennes family, Barons Saye and Sele, since its construction, Broughton Castle stands on an artificial island surrounded by a genuine working moat—an unusual defensive feature that really distinguishes it in the region.
The building expanded considerably over the following centuries, and that layered history is visible throughout the rooms, from the period furnishings and family portraits to the architectural details that mark each era of change.
What sets Broughton apart from many heritage properties is that it still feels genuinely lived in, which brings an authenticity that purely museum-like houses sometimes lack. The scale is intimate rather than grand, making it approachable rather than exhausting to explore. As you move through the spaces, you'll see how the house functioned across different periods. The grounds offer good walking space, and there's real charm to the way the adjacent parish church of St Mary the Virgin sits across the bridge, anchoring the whole setting within its historical community.
Located about two miles southwest of Banbury on the B4035, it's straightforward to reach whether you're making it your main stop or fitting it in during wider exploration of the area. The castle opens seasonally through the summer months, so verify opening times before you go. Plan for a couple of hours to do it justice.
