Just outside Avening, Minchinhampton Golf Course has been operating since 1889 and remains one of the area's most distinctive destinations.
The club maintains three courses, with the Old Course positioned directly on Minchinhampton Common. What makes this genuinely different from most golf clubs is that you'll be playing alongside freely grazing cows and horses – they're permanent residents of this common land and share the fairways and greens as part of the landscape's longstanding pastoral traditions.
If golf isn't on your agenda, the common itself is well worth exploring. The open moorland offers excellent walking with expansive views across the Stroud valleys, and you'll encounter the grazing livestock as you wander. It's a place where you can easily spend an afternoon without any particular plan, just taking in the space and the surrounding scenery. The clubhouse provides good facilities including a pro shop and a café where you can rest and refresh.
Location-wise, this works nicely within a wider Cotswolds visit. Stroud, Tetbury, and Nailsworth are all within easy driving distance, so whether you're coming for a day dedicated to golf or simply want to add an unusual landscape to your route, it's straightforward to fit in.
