Minchinhampton is a working market town that sits on a hilltop in the Stroud District, about four miles southeast of Stroud.
Unlike some Cotswolds settlements that feel preserved for visitors, this is a genuine community where locals live their daily lives alongside those passing through.
The main reason to visit is Minchinhampton Common, the expansive grassland that surrounds much of the town. The views from up here are genuinely worth the trip—on clear days you can see across the Severn Estuary into Wales, with the Cotswolds stretching out in all directions. There's excellent walking here, from gentle ambles to longer routes, and woodland areas dotted across the common add variety to any visit.
The town itself has genuine medieval heritage, appearing in the Domesday Book, and you'll spot this history in the buildings around you. The high street remains functional with independent shops and cafes that cater to residents first and visitors second, which gives it an authentic feel. The church is worth exploring if you're interested in local architecture.
Be prepared for a steep walk up from the surrounding valleys—the elevation is what gives the town its character and those spectacular views. Its position on high ground makes it feel separate from the wider area, though it's close enough to Stroud if you're using that as a base for exploring the broader region.
