This small Gloucestershire village sits about three miles north of Tetbury and offers a genuinely peaceful stop if you're exploring the southern Cotswolds.

Life here revolves around St John the Baptist, the parish church with roots going back to the 12th century, where you'll find some striking medieval stonework and monuments that reward a proper look.

Avening itself stays quiet in the way that makes walking around feel like a real escape. Stone cottages and country lanes form the backbone of the village, much as they have for generations. There's a proper local pub where you'll find actual villagers, and a few small shops for everyday needs, but the real appeal here isn't about major attractions — it's about soaking up the atmosphere and getting out on foot into the landscape.

The footpaths around Avening are genuinely good. You can walk out into the surrounding farmland and woodland without difficulty, and if you're interested in recent royal history, Gatcombe Park, home to the Princess Royal, lies nearby — though the house itself remains private.

Most people pass through Avening as a base or stopping point while staying in the wider area. Tetbury down the road has better facilities and more to do, but Avening offers something you won't find there: a chance to experience actual village life at the slower pace that defines the rural Cotswolds.
