Mid Wilts Way

in All Cannings

This walking route through central Wiltshire starts from the small hamlet of Honeystreet and offers a rewarding way to explore the countryside.

8.6 km

The Mid Wilts Way is a long-distance path that takes you through open landscapes, with options for gentle canal-side strolls or more challenging walks up onto the Downs. The Kennet and Avon Canal, built during the Georgian period, runs through the area and provides a serene setting where you'll often see barges passing by. One of the region's most striking features is the Alton Barnes White Horse, a chalk figure carved into the hillside that's visible from miles around.

Honeystreet has developed a particular reputation as a centre for crop circle research, with a small information centre and shop offering explanations of the mysterious formations that appear in the Vale of Pewsey. The Barge Inn near the canal is a welcoming stop for refreshments and attracts plenty of walkers and boaters throughout the day. For supplies or a wider choice of restaurants, Pewsey is a short drive away and serves as the area's market town. Marlborough, a historic market town with considerable character, lies slightly further afield but is easily accessible if you want to extend your visit. The combination of the canal path, chalk downs, and open vistas makes this a genuinely rewarding area for walking, away from the busier tourist circuits.
