Just outside Tubney, Hitchcopse Pit is a nature reserve that tells an interesting story of land restoration.

This was once a working gravel extraction site, but after mining ceased, the landscape was left to recover naturally. Over time it's developed into a thriving habitat that's now carefully managed for wildlife conservation. It's the kind of place that shows how industrial sites can find valuable new purpose.

The walking paths here take you through a landscape that's evolved organically since operations stopped. You'll encounter wetland areas formed within the old pit basin that attract substantial bird populations, so if you enjoy birdwatching, bring binoculars along. The plant life deserves attention too—different species have colonised the various zones created by the site's geology and varying soil types, making it genuinely rewarding for anyone interested in how ecosystems develop.

The reserve is conveniently positioned if you're in the villages west of Oxford like Frilford or Appleton, or visiting the city itself. It works well as a stopping point when exploring the eastern edge of the Cotswolds, offering something notably different from the rolling hills that characterise much of the region. The walk is straightforward and undemanding, so it's accessible to most people regardless of their fitness level. It's a peaceful spot that's both interesting and genuinely restorative to spend time in.
