Just outside the market town of Woodstock sits this remarkable formal gardens complex, which forms a distinct part of the wider Blenheim Palace estate.
They work beautifully against the sweeping naturalistic parkland that Capability Brown designed, offering something altogether more structured and ordered. As you walk through, you'll find yourself moving between themed areas, each with its own character. The Italian Garden presents elegant fountains and sculptures arranged across terraced beds in grand symmetry, while the Secret Garden tucked away elsewhere offers a more intimate experience, full of winding paths and unexpected plantings. The Water Terraces, designed by Achille Duchene, are genuinely striking and give you wonderful views back towards the palace itself. The Rose Garden comes alive in summer and deserves a visit when the blooms are at their peak. These gardens have evolved over centuries alongside the palace, with different periods of landscape design layered into what you see today. They're closely tied to the history of the Churchill family and the Dukes of Marlborough. You'll find plenty of space for a long, wandering walk here, whether you're drawn to the grand vistas or prefer to find a quiet corner for reflection. When you've explored enough, Woodstock is immediately accessible for a meal or a drink, and Oxford is only a short drive away if you want to explore further afield.
