This Wiltshire village sits in a narrow valley about five miles northwest of Chippenham, which puts it within easy reach of Bath or the wider Cotswolds region.
The village splits into two parts: the main settlement clusters along By Brook down in the valley, while Upper Castle Combe spreads across higher ground to the east along the B4039.
What makes Combe genuinely special is how architecturally consistent it feels. The entire historic centre is built from Cotswold stone cottages spanning centuries, and remarkably, no new houses have been constructed here since around 1600. This means you're actually walking through streets that look much as they would have in the medieval period, though obviously better maintained these days.
The village has become well known as a filming location, which really speaks to how visually intact the place remains. You can wander the main street at your own pace, taking in the stonework and period details, and you'll find a working market cross that still serves the community. The presence of By Brook adds genuine character without feeling at all contrived.
It does draw visitors, especially weekends, so arriving early or coming outside peak season gives you a more peaceful experience. Commercial facilities are modest by design, so it works best as a stop during a broader Cotswolds tour rather than something requiring a full day. The countryside around it does offer good walking opportunities though, if you want to extend your visit.
