East Garston is a working village in West Berkshire, about five miles north of Hungerford, that sits along the River Lambourn.
What makes it distinctive is how the river runs through the centre, with older cottages positioned on the far bank, each connected by its own private bridge across the water. The buildings themselves—a mix of stone and flint—reach back centuries and remain as lived-in homes rather than preserved exhibits, which gives the place an authentic, unhurried feel.
It's a small village, so you won't need hours to explore, but it's worth walking through if you're nearby. The Lambourn is pleasant for riverside walks, especially if you venture out toward the surrounding countryside. There's a church here if local history interests you, and a couple of pubs that do decent food and genuinely welcome visitors.
East Garston works best as a stop on a larger trip through the Cotswolds or North Berkshire rather than as a destination in itself. Hungerford, just down the road, has more shops and services if you need them. The village is accessible by car though parking is limited. You might come for lunch and a stroll, or to stretch your legs after a drive, and that's really the point—it's the kind of place that appeals to people precisely because it doesn't demand much attention, which is refreshing when everywhere else is geared toward visitors.
