This walking route takes you through the heart of the Cotswolds around Lower Swell, where you'll find yourself moving between characterful golden-stone villages linked by gentle hills and open fields where sheep graze.
The path is well-marked and designed for steady enjoyment rather than serious challenge, making it accessible to most walkers.
The real draw here is Donnington Brewery, which has been producing beer since 1865 using traditional water power. It's one of those places that genuinely connects you to local history—you can often watch the waterwheel turning as it has for generations. Beyond the brewery itself, the walk winds through peaceful lanes where you might discover a village church or simply soak up the quieter side of the Cotswolds.
The route works well as a half-day outing, and you're positioned nicely between two larger hubs if you want to extend your visit. Stow-on-the-Wold is a short distance away with its busy market town atmosphere and plenty of pubs and restaurants, while Bourton-on-the-Water sits equally close by. Many people combine this walk with time exploring one or both of those places, using them as a base for accommodation or a destination for lunch afterwards. It's the kind of walk that gives you a real sense of how the Cotswolds actually works as a living, working landscape rather than just a postcard image.
