This small village sits on the edge of the Wiltshire downs, just a few miles south of Chippenham and makes a good base for exploring both the Cotswolds and the wider Wiltshire countryside.
Cherhill is perhaps best known for the white horse carved into the chalk hillside above the village, which dates back to 1780 and remains one of the area's most recognizable landmarks. A local landowner created the horse, and it's maintained to this day, making it a popular destination for walkers seeking views across the surrounding landscape.
The village itself is quiet and unassuming, with a traditional church and scattered homes around a modest center. What draws people here is really the location and the peaceful atmosphere. You can walk up to the white horse in about an hour, or simply wander the rolling countryside that stretches around the village. Swallowhead Spring nearby offers an easy stroll, and the whole area is crossed by footpaths that connect to larger walking routes across the downs.
Practically speaking, Cherhill works well as either a base or a stopping point when you're exploring Wiltshire. Chippenham is close by if you need shops and services, and you're well positioned to reach more famous attractions like Stonehenge and the Marlborough Downs.
