This Iron Age hillfort sits on top of Cherhill Down, offering views that stretch across Wiltshire in all directions.
Communities built it during the Iron Age, and it mattered enough to people that they continued using it through the Roman period—a sign of how strategically important this location was over centuries.
Walking the earthworks here lets you appreciate the fort's real scale. The banks and ditches that marked its boundaries are still clearly visible, and you can trace them around the open downland at your own pace. It's generally breezy up here, which makes it an enjoyable spot to spend an hour or two if you're after a proper walk and some fresh air.
The Cherhill White Horse deserves attention too—a chalk figure carved into the hillside just below the fort. Looking down at it from above creates a striking view and adds another dimension to your time on the hill.
It's a peaceful place to spend time and naturally leads you to think about how people actually lived on these hills two thousand years ago. Getting there is straightforward enough: both Calne and Devizes are just a short drive away, so you can handle the practical stuff—food, drink, and a place to stay—in either of those market towns before or after you visit.
