You'll come across a Caucasian wingnut among the thousands of trees spread across Westonbirt Arboretum, one of many extraordinary specimens that rewards a closer look.

Originally from the Caucasus region and parts of Asia, these trees grow to impressive heights with vigorous, spreading crowns. Visit later in the year and you'll see the distinctive winged fruits that give the tree its common name.

Westonbirt was established by Robert Holford in the mid-19th century and has grown into a world-class collection now managed by Forestry England. It operates as both a leading research centre and a conservation space, bringing together over 15,000 trees from around the world. The extensive walking trails and treetop walkway allow you to experience remarkable botanical variety, with each species offering something different to notice. The arboretum is particularly known for its autumn colours and spring blossoms.

Spending time identifying individual trees like this one really deepens your understanding of what makes the place special. It's an excellent spot for a leisurely afternoon, and you're conveniently positioned near Tetbury and other Cotswolds towns where you'll find restaurants and places to stay if you want to make a longer visit of it.
