You'll find one of the world's most impressive tree collections spread across 600 acres, with around 15,000 specimens gathered from across the globe.
Any season rewards a visit, though autumn genuinely deserves a dedicated trip when the leaves turn brilliant shades of gold and crimson. The grounds split into two distinct areas: the Old Arboretum, which features mature trees planted during the Victorian era by Robert Holford from the mid-19th century onwards, and Silk Wood, offering a more natural woodland experience while focusing on conservation work. The Treetop Walkway is genuinely worth your time – it lifts you above the forest floor and gives you perspectives you simply can't get from ground level, and it's fully accessible for everyone.
Since its Victorian origins, the site has grown into a globally significant centre for tree conservation and education, now managed by Forestry England. You could easily spend a whole day exploring the various paths, hunting for rare species, or just enjoying the peaceful surroundings. There's a visitor centre, café, and shop on site to support your visit. Location-wise, it's a short drive from Tetbury, and equally convenient to Malmesbury or Cirencester, making it an ideal day out from the southern Cotswolds. Parking is straightforward and plentiful.
