Forestry England manages this remarkable arboretum, which holds one of the world's most significant collections of trees gathered from across the globe.
What you're walking through represents over 150 years of deliberate plant collection and scientific work, stretching back to when Robert Holford established it in the mid-19th century. The site continues this legacy today, playing an active role in conservation research and education rather than simply preserving what's already here.
The grounds reward exploration through winding paths that take you past towering specimens and through ancient woodlands. The Treetop Walkway is particularly worth your time, lifting you up into the canopy and offering perspectives impossible from ground level. Different seasons genuinely transform the experience: spring brings flowering displays, summer offers dense green shade, and autumn delivers remarkable colour changes across the landscape.
It's genuinely family-friendly, with dedicated play areas and regular seasonal events throughout the year. There's something worth experiencing whenever you visit. From the southern Cotswolds, this makes an excellent day trip – it's only a short drive from Tetbury and Malmesbury. Whether you're interested in botany, want a peaceful walk, or are introducing children to the natural world, you'll find an experience that goes well beyond what you'd get from a typical woodland visit.
