You'll find this small riverside hamlet tucked between Oxford and Witney along the Thames, where a working ferry and a riverside pub form the main reasons to visit.

It's the sort of place that unfolds as you explore, with the river itself being the real draw.

The ferry here has operated in different forms for hundreds of years and still runs during the summer months, offering a genuine feel for how the Thames has historically connected communities. The pub serves decent food and drink with views across the water that tend to make people linger longer than they expect.

Bablock Hythe sits on the Thames Path, the 185-mile national trail that stretches from near Kemble all the way to London, making it useful whether you're tackling a serious long-distance walk or just exploring a section. The walking here is relatively easy, though like much of the Thames Path west of Oxford, the route can become waterlogged during winter, so you'll want to pick your season.

It's close enough to Oxford for a day trip but far enough out to feel genuinely rural and removed. Witney is within reach if you need bigger town facilities, but the real appeal of Bablock Hythe is its straightforward character and that strong connection to the river. This is a place where the Thames itself is the main event, and the simplicity of that fact is precisely what makes it worth visiting.
