Shippon is a small place with a large hinterland, and that combination works in your favour. The village itself is quiet and quickly walked, but draw a circle of roughly two miles around it and you'll find something like 54 places to eat and drink, nine for shopping, eight activities and seven things to visit, along with a handful of places to stay and a small run of events and culture venues. It suits a visitor who wants a base rather than a spectacle: somewhere to sleep and eat well, with streets, green space and independent shops all within easy reach on foot or by a short drive.
A good few hours here usually starts with a wander and ends at a table. Barton Fields gives you somewhere to stretch your legs first, after which you might browse for something to take home from Fabulous Flowers or follow West Saint Helen Street for its mix of everyday shops and older frontages. Come evening, the choice is genuinely wide: the Blue Boar for a pint and a proper sit-down, or Mahee Tandoori if you'd rather finish with something spiced.
