Abbey Gateway and Market Place

in Shippon

Illustration — photo coming soon

You'll find yourself in the centre of this working market town facing an impressive stone gateway, all that remains of what was once a grand Benedictine abbey.

Walking through this ancient archway takes you into grounds that carry the weight of history, where you can still see surviving structures including the Checker and the Long Gallery. The abbey itself dates back to the 7th century, when it was one of medieval England's most important religious institutions. It's worth pausing here to picture what those grounds looked like in their heyday, before time reduced this powerhouse to fragments.

The Market Place sprawls out just beyond, offering a completely different energy. The County Hall dominates this open square, a striking 17th-century building that now functions as a museum exploring the area's local heritage. This remains a genuine working hub, not a museum piece itself, with cafes where you can grab a coffee, independent shops to browse, and plenty of space to simply wander. The River Thames is only a short walk away if you want to extend your time here. The location works well as a base for exploring further afield. Oxford lies to the north and is straightforward to reach, while smaller villages like Shippon are within easy reach if you're seeking quieter surroundings.
