East Hendred is the sort of village you come to when you'd rather potter than tick off a list. It's small, but the area around it is better supplied than you might expect: within roughly two miles you'll find seventeen places to eat and drink, four places to stay, three to visit, three offering activities, along with a shop, a local service and somewhere putting on events and culture. That mix makes it an easy base for a weekend as well as a worthwhile stop on a day out, particularly if you like your walking and your lunches in equal measure.

A good few hours here might begin at Champs Chapel Museum of East Hendred, which tells the village's story in a modest, well-kept way, before you head out for coffee or something more substantial at the Lightbox Cafe. From there it's no distance to the R112 Visitors Centre if you want a change of subject, or to Chilton Garden Centre for a slow browse and a few things to take home. Should you decide to stay on, Mather House Guest House and Ridgeway House both put you within strolling distance of the village.
