This cycling route takes you on a rewarding journey through Oxfordshire, connecting three very different sides of the region's character.
You'll start from Didcot, a town with genuine railway significance. The Didcot Railway Centre is worth visiting before you leave—you can watch working steam engines in action, which gives you a real sense of the area's industrial past.
Once you're on the bike, the landscape transforms quickly. You'll leave the town behind and find yourself cycling through open countryside with gentle hills, heading towards East Hendred. This village sits in the Vale of White Horse and shows you how settlements here have developed over centuries. The architecture tells that story, with thatched cottages and a stream running through the heart of the place. It's a good spot to stop, walk around, and maybe visit one of the local pubs for a break.
From there, your route continues to Harwell Campus, which sits in complete contrast to what you've just seen. This is one of the UK's major scientific research facilities, representing the cutting edge of innovation and discovery. What makes this ride special is how it moves between these three worlds—industrial heritage, ancient village life, and modern science—all within a few miles. The route is mostly flat and manageable, making it accessible whether you're basing yourself in Oxford, Abingdon, or nearby towns.
