East Hendred is a small Oxfordshire village in the Vale of the White Horse, roughly eight miles south of Wantage and conveniently positioned between larger towns like Abingdon-on-Thames.
If you're looking for somewhere to spend a quiet afternoon away from the crowds that gather in busier parts of the Cotswolds, this is a good choice.
The village centers on a traditional green and has retained much of its authentic character. St Augustine's Church, with its commanding tower, is the focal point and worth stepping inside if you can. You'll find genuine community life here rather than a tourist bubble — local shops and pubs serve residents first, which means you actually get a sense of how the place functions day to day.
Walking is the main draw. The surrounding countryside is excellent for rambling, with chalk downland and the Ock Valley offering several well-marked routes at different difficulty levels. The landscape has a gentle appeal rather than dramatic scenery, and depending on which path you choose, you might encounter very few other walkers at all.
The village's history is rooted in agricultural life and rural Oxfordshire traditions. It's worth visiting if you want to see how Cotswolds villages genuinely operate rather than how they're presented in promotional materials.
