This small village sits in the Vale of the White Horse, just a few miles south of Wantage in Oxfordshire.
West Hendred is the kind of place where you can genuinely experience the rhythm of rural English life without the crowds that descend on bigger Cotswolds destinations. The village centres around All Saints Church, a lovely medieval building that's worth exploring inside, and there's an interesting connection to the Knights Templar if you're into that sort of history.
What makes West Hendred special is how walkable it is. You can explore the surrounding countryside on several good footpaths that take you through farmland and woodland, with plenty of opportunities to spot wildlife. The village itself has that genuine farming community feel, with a proper pub where locals actually gather. It's genuinely quiet here, especially on weekdays, so if you're after peace and fresh air rather than attractions, you'll appreciate it more than someone looking for museums or shops.
The location works well too. You're close enough to Wantage for additional amenities, and the wider Vale of the White Horse area offers other villages and the famous chalk figure itself. It works as a good base for walking or as a stop-off if you're exploring Oxfordshire's quieter corners. Bring good boots and an appetite for countryside.
