Avebury is a village that sits inside a prehistoric monument rather than beside one, and that arrangement shapes everything about a visit. Lanes run between the standing stones, sheep graze the banks of the henge, and you can walk the earthworks before breakfast without paying for a ticket or queueing at a gate. Within about two miles you'll find eighteen places worth visiting, along with three places to stay, three for eating and drinking, two services, one shop and one activity — enough to fill a day, but not so much that you'll feel hurried between them.

A good few hours usually starts with a circuit of Avebury Stone Circle, following the ditch round and crossing the road twice as you go, then heading south along West Kennet Avenue, where paired stones mark the old processional route across the fields. Come back into the village for lunch at The Circle Restaurant, and allow time for The Henge Shop, which is useful for maps and books if you want to understand what you've just walked through.
