Inside the historic Tithe Barn in Avebury village sits a museum that really helps you make sense of the prehistoric monument surrounding you.

Alexander Keiller, an archaeologist who bought the Avebury site in the 1930s, excavated and reconstructed much of what you see today, and his collection forms the backbone of what's on display here. You'll find artefacts spanning the Neolithic and Bronze Age periods—pottery shards, tools, and skeletal remains—all discovered from the Avebury World Heritage Site itself. These objects tell the story of the people who built this remarkable landscape and invested enormous effort into creating it.

The museum works best as either a starting point before you explore the standing stones and earthworks, or as a place to reflect afterwards. Either way, the exhibits provide the context that transforms stones and earth banks from impressive curiosities into evidence of genuine human achievement and planning. Since the museum sits right in the village, you can easily spend an hour or two here and then wander the circles at your own pace. If you need more facilities, Marlborough is a pleasant market town a short drive away with good shops and places to eat. The location also makes it straightforward to visit from Devizes or Swindon if you're exploring the broader region.
