This 600-acre arboretum spreads across Gloucestershire countryside and ranks among the world's most significant collections of trees and shrubs.

Robert Stayner Holford, a Victorian collector, founded it in the mid-19th century, and it's now maintained by Forestry England.

What makes it work well is how the place transforms throughout the year. Autumn floods the grounds with colour as thousands of different species change, while spring brings rhododendrons and magnolias into full bloom. Even in winter, when branches are bare and the air is crisp, there's a particular kind of beauty to appreciate. You can easily spend a full day here following the extensive path network and discovering specimens from across the world. The elevated treetop walkway deserves priority on your visit—it gives you a completely different perspective over the canopy and makes exploration accessible for most people.

The location works well for broader exploration too. Both Tetbury and Malmesbury, proper Cotswold towns with their own appeal, sit just a short drive away, so you can combine time here with wandering elsewhere or stopping for lunch without much fuss. Whether you're serious about plants and want to study the collection properly or simply after a peaceful walk somewhere green and calm, there's genuine substance here to make a visit feel worthwhile.
