This 300-acre nature reserve sits in a sheltered valley just south of Stroud, in the countryside stretching down towards Nailsworth.
It's managed as a working landscape for woodland and grassland habitats, and you can easily spend a few hours here without the crowds that build up at more famous spots.
The walking really is worthwhile. Trails wind through mixed woodland and open meadows with enough variety for different fitness levels, and the terrain stays gentle enough for families and casual walkers. You'll encounter mature parkland trees, ponds where wildlife congregates, and meadows that burst with seasonal wildflowers. Fallow deer are common sightings, and the birdlife is excellent. On quieter days you might have large stretches of the park almost to yourself.
What gives it historical weight is Woodchester Roman Villa, which lies within the reserve. The site contains one of the finest mosaic pavements ever discovered in Britain, though the mosaics themselves are kept covered for protection. The interpretation boards tell the story well, and there's something rather special about walking over ground that was inhabited nearly two thousand years ago.
Getting there from Stroud is straightforward, with parking available on site. Admission is free, making it an accessible option for a half-day outing, and the valley setting means you're generally sheltered from the worst of the weather.
