Cumnor itself has quite a story attached to it. The village is most notably connected to Amy Robsart, wife of Robert Dudley, Earl of Leicester, whose death here in 1560 remains one of those historical mysteries that keeps capturing people's imaginations. The original Cumnor Place no longer stands, but the parish church still carries connections to her story, and there are pleasant walks around the village if you want to wander and absorb its character.
What really makes this location work is how close you are to Oxford. It's just a short drive or bus ride away, which means you can easily spend several days exploring the university colleges, museums, and the busy city centre without committing to staying in town. If you're interested in grander historical sites, Blenheim Palace, a UNESCO World Heritage property, is also readily accessible from here.
So The Cottage works well if you want a calm village setting but don't want to feel removed from history and proper city life. You get the quiet you're after without missing out on what the wider area has to offer.
