Just a short distance from Abingdon and easily accessible from Oxford, Jarn Mound offers something quite different from your typical country estate.
This artificial hill was built in the early twentieth century by Sir Arthur Evans, the archaeologist best known for uncovering Knossos in Crete. Rather than construct a traditional manor house, Evans chose to shape this distinctive earthwork as a personal project, complete with a winding path that spirals up to the summit.
Standing at the top rewards you with sweeping views across Oxfordshire's countryside, with Oxford's spires visible in the distance. It's an excellent spot for a leisurely walk, providing a peaceful break from busier attractions while offering insight into Evans' unconventional ideas about landscape design. The mound sits within Jarn Garden, which Evans also developed and which now operates as a nature reserve. You'll find various trees and carefully considered planting throughout the grounds, reflecting the thought that went into the original scheme.
The location works well as a stopping point if you're in the Dry Sandford area or exploring the quieter stretches around Abingdon-on-Thames. It's the sort of place that appeals to anyone curious about local history, unusual architecture, or simply wanting some open air and green space away from more crowded destinations.
