The Bruce Arms is a proper village pub in Wootton Rivers where you'll find exactly what a good local should offer.
It's the kind of place where regulars prop up the bar alongside visitors, and everyone feels welcome. The location is particularly handy if you're walking or cycling the Kennet & Avon Canal – the pub sits right by the towpath, making it an ideal spot to rest your legs after a stretch along the water.
Food-wise, you're looking at straightforward pub fare done well, alongside a decent selection of local beers and ciders. On cooler days there's a fire to warm you by indoors, and when the weather's kind, the garden's a pleasant spot to sit with a drink. The village itself is small and peaceful, centred around the canal, so there's a nice walk to be had before or after you visit.
For larger shops and more substantial facilities, Marlborough is just a short drive north – it's a proper market town with plenty of history. Pewsey lies to the west if you're heading that way, and both towns offer good links into the wider Wiltshire region. If you want to experience rural Wiltshire as it actually is rather than how it appears in postcards, this is a good place to do it.
