This seven-acre nature reserve sits just outside Tewkesbury and has been carefully managed for wildlife since the 1970s.

The Gloucestershire Wildlife Trust took it over in 1984 and continues to maintain it as an important habitat for local species.

What makes this place special is its unlikely origin. It was built on the grounds of an old railway line, and that industrial heritage actually creates ideal conditions for wildlife. The varied terrain from the former tracks allows different plants and animals to thrive alongside each other. The reserve is particularly strong for birdwatching, especially during migration seasons, and the wetland areas support dragonflies and numerous insects. You'll spot butterflies during warmer months and seasonal wildflowers throughout the year.

This is a place that rewards taking your time. The paths are easy to navigate and accessible for all abilities, so you don't need any special equipment beyond binoculars if you're interested in spotting wildlife, though plenty of visitors simply come for the peace and greenery. Spring and early summer are especially worthwhile when wildlife activity is at its peak and the reserve feels most vibrant.

Because it's right on the edge of Tewkesbury town centre, it's straightforward to combine a visit here with exploring the town itself, which has an impressive abbey and sits at a significant riverside location. You could easily spend an hour or two wandering the reserve, then head into town afterwards for further exploration.
