This small Gloucestershire village sits quietly in the heart of the Cotswolds, about six miles northwest of Cirencester and seven miles east of Painswick.

You'll more likely stumble upon it while driving through the rolling countryside than plan a specific visit, but that's actually what makes it worth stopping for.

The village revolves around St Mary's parish church and is dominated by Syde Manor, an impressive stone manor house that showcases local architecture across several centuries. The building began as a 16th-century construction, expanded in the 17th century, and gained a more formal Georgian front entrance sometime in the late 1700s or early 1800s. Pay attention to the windows as you walk past—you'll spot unusual three-centred arches above some of the mullioned windows, a detail that demonstrates genuine craftsmanship. The whole structure, built from local stone rubble with a traditional Cotswold stone roof, is a fine example of the region's building heritage.

The village sits near the source of the River Frome, so you'll find pleasant walking country right on your doorstep. It's small enough that you can explore it in under an hour, making it a worthwhile stop if you're moving between Cirencester and Painswick, or simply passing through the region. There's a real sense of continuity here, with the landscape and buildings largely unchanged for generations.
