A short drive from Tetbury, you'll discover one of the world's most important tree collections.
Established in the mid-19th century by Robert Stayner Holford, an avid plant collector who gathered specimens from around the globe, this arboretum is now run by Forestry England and makes a wonderful destination for anyone seeking time in natural surroundings.
The grounds are split into two distinct areas. The Old Arboretum features a more formal design, while Silk Wood provides a natural woodland setting. You can explore thousands of trees, many genuinely rare, along well-maintained paths that work for visitors of all ages and abilities. The STIHL Treetop Walkway is a real highlight, allowing you to walk among the canopies for an entirely different view of the landscape. Spring brings fresh growth and colour, while autumn sets the place ablaze with brilliant foliage.
The arboretum operates as both a conservation space and educational resource—essentially a living museum devoted to trees. It works perfectly for a leisurely stroll, a family day out with a picnic, or simply watching the seasons change. Nearby Malmesbury is worth visiting too, so you can easily combine your time here with further exploration of the wider Cotswolds.
