This small hamlet sits in the rolling countryside northeast of Cirencester, making it an ideal base for exploring the quieter side of the Cotswolds.
You'll find yourself surrounded by genuine working farmland rather than tourist crowds, which many visitors find refreshing after time in busier market towns.
The area is perfect for walking, with several footpaths cutting through the surrounding fields and connecting to nearby villages. The landscape here feels authentic to how the Cotswolds actually function as a living, farming region rather than a preserved museum piece. You can spend time spotting wildlife, enjoying long views across valleys, and discovering small stone walls and farm buildings that show traditional Cotswolds architecture at work.
Stanmore itself is tiny, but you're well-positioned to visit larger villages nearby. Cirencester is just a few miles away and offers all the shops, restaurants and attractions you might want. Barnsley village, very close by, has a charming church and a couple of good pubs where you can get local recommendations.
The area works best if you're the type of visitor who enjoys quiet country walks, photography, or simply sitting with a cup of tea watching the seasons change across farmland. Spring lambs and summer wildflowers are particularly worth timing a visit around if you can manage it.
