The Spill Weirs form a series of cascades where the River Frome descends through the valley near Stroud, creating that distinctive sound of water moving over stone.
It's a peaceful spot to step back from the town's activity and appreciate how central water has always been to this area.
The weirs are deeply connected to Stroud's industrial past. The town developed around its textile mills, which relied entirely on the river's power to operate. These weirs played their part in managing water flow and regulating the river to support the mills. As you walk here, you're following paths that generations of mill workers would have known and depended on.
The weirs sit within a longer valley walk along the Frome, where you can easily spend an hour or two exploring. The riverside paths are genuinely pleasant, and once you've had enough of the landscape, Stroud's town centre is just a short walk away. The centre has plenty of independent shops and hosts an award-winning farmers' market. If you want to explore more of the Cotswolds, Painswick and Nailsworth are both nearby and worth visiting for an afternoon to get a sense of the wider area.
