Snowshill

This small Gloucestershire village sits on the edge of the Cotswolds near Broadway, with a population of just 164 people.

It's genuinely quiet here, the kind of place where you escape the busier tourist routes that run through the larger towns nearby.

Most visitors come for Snowshill Manor, a Tudor house that tells you everything about its former owner, Charles Paget Wade. He was an obsessive collector who filled the rooms with thousands of objects—Japanese armour, vintage bicycles, and countless other curiosities he'd gathered throughout his life. Walking through the manor feels like stepping into someone's wonderfully chaotic personal world, and the gardens provide a genuine place to rest afterward. National Trust members get free entry, while others pay a modest fee.

Beyond the manor itself, the village is a good starting point for the kind of walking the Cotswolds does well. You'll find paths leading out across rolling countryside that connect to Broadway to the north or head toward other villages. There's a village pub if you need a meal or drink, though food options are limited—which is part of what makes it feel so removed from everyday life.

Plan for a half-day visit here, ideally combined with nearby Broadway or Chipping Campden. Go early if you want to avoid crowds at the manor, and wear comfortable shoes since there's plenty of ground to cover.
