This small hamlet sits in a wooded valley roughly halfway between Castle Combe and Box, about 5 miles west of Chippenham.

The Bybrook River runs through here, and it's genuinely one of those places that rewards a leisurely walk far more than a quick drive-through.

Most visitors come for walking. The valley setting gives you proper woodland atmosphere, and the river crossing provides the hamlet's natural focal point. There's a bridge here that's served as an important crossing for centuries, and the landscape itself carries evidence of that long history of use and settlement. You'll see stone cottages typical of the area, though it's genuinely small—no shops or facilities—so come prepared for that.

The history is worth understanding once you're here. Slaughterford was its own parish before administrative changes reshaped the area over the years. That sense of age and former independence lingers in how the settlement sits in the valley.

It works well as part of a circular walk taking in Castle Combe or Box, or simply as a peaceful spot to sit by water away from the main tourist crowds. The surrounding woodland is attractive year-round, and the river creates a real sense of seclusion despite being only a few miles from Chippenham. Bring proper boots and be ready for potentially muddy paths, particularly after rain.
