Silk Wood operates quite differently from the manicured gardens you'll find elsewhere at Westonbirt.
This is genuine ancient woodland where native oaks and beeches have been growing for centuries, and what makes it special is how the arboretum has actively managed the space over time. Paths wind through thoughtfully, connecting older plantings from the arboretum's early days with newer additions that reflect ongoing conservation work. As you walk, you're really moving through different periods of history, where deliberate modern stewardship sits alongside natural processes.
The woodland holds an impressive range of tree species from around the world, growing together with native plants in ways that feel genuinely woven into the landscape rather than imposed on it. This is the kind of place that rewards you for taking your time and paying attention. If you move slowly enough, you might spot wildlife, and the peaceful atmosphere and sense of scale make it feel like the true centre of the arboretum, a living testament to how forests can be both preserved and actively worked with.
You could easily spend several hours exploring here. It's conveniently placed for a day trip from nearby Tetbury or Malmesbury, making it a worthwhile stop when you're exploring this part of the Cotswolds.
