This historic Wiltshire market town offers a genuine mix of history and working community life, making it a worthwhile stop as you explore the broader Cotswolds region.
The Shambles car park sits right in the centre of town and gives you convenient access to everything on foot. Once you've parked, the whole place spreads out around you within easy walking distance.
Head out into the lively market place, which has been the town's focal point for centuries. The area around the Shambles itself was once a thriving meat market, and you can still feel that sense of activity today. The town's story centres around its Norman castle, though what you see now is largely a Victorian reconstruction with plenty of character preserved in its grounds. The real engineering marvel, though, is the Kennet and Avon Canal just outside town. The Caen Hill Locks represent an extraordinary feat of Georgian construction – 29 locks in succession that still work as intended. Walking the towpath here gives you chances to watch barges working their way through the system, and it's genuinely peaceful.
You'll also spot the distinctive shire horses from Wadworth Brewery making their rounds delivering local ales, a tradition that's been going strong for generations. The town centre has independent shops and cafes worth exploring, plus a museum if you want to dig deeper into local history. It's the sort of place that rewards a proper wander before you continue on towards Marlborough or Bath.
