This world-renowned arboretum sits conveniently between Tetbury and Malmesbury and holds around 15,000 trees from across the globe across its 600 acres.
Robert Holford established the collection in 1829, and his son George later expanded it considerably, creating what is now one of Europe's most important botanical collections. Forestry England manages the site today, maintaining both its scientific significance and public accessibility.
You can easily fill a full day here, following clearly marked trails that suit different fitness levels and interests. Spring brings fresh growth, summer offers shaded walks under dense canopies, and autumn draws international visitors for the spectacular colour changes. The Stihl Treetop Walkway is particularly worth experiencing, offering views of the forest from high among the branches—a perspective you won't get from the ground.
Beyond walking, there's genuine educational value if you're interested in rare species and botanical diversity. Children find plenty to explore and discover, and the site regularly hosts events and activities throughout the year, so checking what's on before you visit is worthwhile. Whether you're seeking peaceful woodland time, a chance to learn something new, or simply a different kind of outdoor experience, this place delivers across all those fronts. Pack a picnic and prepare for a satisfying day out.
