Just outside Swindon, the village of Hodson is home to the Richard Jefferies Museum, set in the 17th-century farmhouse where the Victorian writer and naturalist spent his childhood and formative years.

Everything Jefferies would go on to write emerged from his time here, rooted in the intimate knowledge of the English countryside he gained growing up on these grounds.

Inside the house, you move through the rooms where he spent his childhood, getting a genuine sense of how he lived and what surrounded him daily. The exhibitions follow his literary career and life story while documenting rural England during the Victorian period, showing you the landscapes and seasonal patterns that he observed with such precision and later captured in his work. The gardens are integral to understanding him as much as the building itself. They're worth spending time in without hurrying, and it becomes clear how exploring these grounds would have nourished his careful attention to nature and the living world around him.

This is somewhere that benefits from taking your time rather than moving through quickly. If you're drawn to Victorian literature, interested in rural history, or curious about how a writer's immediate surroundings can become the foundation of their work, you'll find plenty to connect with here. Swindon lies just a short drive away, so you can easily combine a visit with other plans in the area or find somewhere to eat, making this a straightforward stop while you're exploring the outer edges of the Cotswolds.
