In the northern reaches of the Cotswolds near the village of Prescott stands Nottingham Camp, the remains of a Roman military installation that's been quietly weathering the centuries for nearly two thousand years.
What you'll see here are earthen banks and ditches still visible in the landscape, the physical traces of what was likely either a temporary marching base or a more permanent fort used by Roman legions.
There's something compelling about standing among these ancient defences and trying to picture the soldiers who constructed them, the daily routines and strategic thinking that went into choosing this location. You won't find restored buildings or reconstructed structures here, but that's rather the point. The survival of the earthworks themselves, largely unadorned by modern interpretation, creates an immediate sense of connection across time. The site also occupies a genuinely strategic position with broad views across the Gloucestershire countryside, which helps explain why the Romans selected it in the first place.
The site is straightforward to reach by car and offers a quieter alternative to busier attractions in the area. Cheltenham, the well-established spa town with plenty of restaurants, shops, and places to stay, lies a short drive to the south. Tewkesbury and its historic abbey are equally accessible to the west. If Roman history interests you and you're after somewhere peaceful to explore, this spot rewards the detour away from the main tourist circuit.
