Nature reserve

in Lechlade

A small nature reserve in the valley near Chalford, a few miles south of Stroud, run by Gloucestershire Wildlife Trust since 1964.

The reserve spans about 9 acres and provides a quiet retreat for anyone interested in local wildlife and woodland walking.

The habitats here are typical of what you'll find across the Cotswolds valleys—mixed woodland, grassland, and vegetation along the stream that support various birds, insects, and small mammals. The paths are easy enough that you can comfortably spend a couple of hours exploring without needing any special gear or experience. Birdwatchers turn up regularly, especially during migration periods, and if you're interested in wildflowers, spring and summer offer plenty to look at.

The location works well if you're already spending time in Stroud. Chalford itself is a working village with genuine character, built steeply into the Golden Valley, and you're close enough to Stroud's independent shops and cafes if you want to combine a walk here with some time exploring town. This is the kind of place locals use regularly rather than a major tourist destination, so it stays peaceful and uncrowded most of the time. If you're after an authentic walk through local woodland rather than a polished attraction, you'll find what you're looking for here.
