National Trust Car Park - Cheese Wharf

in Buscot

Illustration — photo coming soon

This National Trust car park occupies the site of what was once the Cheese Wharf, right beside the upper Thames where the river flows narrow and tranquil.

It's a useful base for exploring this quieter stretch of the Cotswolds, with Kelmscott Manor being the main reason most people visit—just a short walk away. The manor was home to William Morris, the Arts and Crafts designer and reformer whose influence shaped design for generations. The house has been preserved much as Morris left it, allowing you to see his original textiles, furniture, and personal belongings and get a genuine feel for how he lived and worked. The National Trust maintains the property today, continuing the stewardship it's received since the Society of Antiquaries first took it on.

The car park also provides access to the Thames Path, so you can wander along the riverbank if the mood takes you. Standing by the water, you can still picture the commercial life this spot once had, when boats loaded up with cheese and other goods to carry downstream. The village itself has barely changed, with traditional stone buildings and minimal modern development. For supplies or a wider range of attractions, Lechlade-on-Thames sits a short way east along the river, while Faringdon is positioned to the south.
